5 - 15 May 2009

Ethical entrepreneurs believe that there are other things as important as making a profit, such as helping the world’s poorest people or using ethically sourced materials. To celebrate ethical business, we’re proud to announce Green and Ethical Fortnight, timed to coincide with the BIG BANG!! World Fair Trade Day on 9 May 2009.

Corporate social responsibility isn’t just for big business

Woman Aloud - the C in me

Tracy de Gietelink

woman-aloud-flier

Pierced earrings, tweezers, tattoos, body piercings, toothbrush, the metal teeth on a cling film box… my blood is highly infectious, but everyone around me is safe… because I know I carry the virus and I make things safe. Approximately 20% of sufferers in this country know they are infected - that leaves 80% gaily unaware, and therefore not taking appropriate precautions.

My goal, pure and simple, is to raise awareness of Hepatitis C. Once you understand the virus you can take simple, yet life saving steps/precautions to prevent cross-infection - either way.

Increased late filing penalties for annual company accounts

Increased late filing penalties for annual company accounts

The penalties for the late filing of annual company accounts rose as of 1 February 2009. The Companies Act 2006 provides that all companies must deliver annual accounts to the Registrar of Companies by the due date and that a late filing penalty will be payable if the accounts are delivered late. These penalties were introduced in 1992 to encourage limited company directors to file their accounts on time as this statutory information is required for the public record.

The February 2009 changes include an increase in penalties generally, a faster rate of increase for companies filing more than one month late and a doubling of the penalty when filing late two years in a row. Penalties now run to

  • £150 for filing up to a month late
  • £375 for 1-3 months
  • £750 for 3-6 months
  • and £1500 for more than 6 months late.

Penalties apply to flat management and dormant companies as well as trading companies.

It is vital that you make sure you allow enough time for your accounts to be filed within the period stated in the Companies Act and remember that penalties will not be waived for papers delayed in the post.

Petition Downing Street for Better Access to Business Premises

Steve Wilkinson (Right hand side) with Linda Holland at the RADAR Awards

Steve Wilkinson (Right hand side) with Linda Holland at the RADAR Awards

It’s been a while since we introduced Steve Wilkinson but a lot has happened since then!

At the end of August Steve made a film with the BBC to promote his Something Should be Done campaign. This campaign is seeking to improve disabled people’s quality of life by making it mandatory for any business with a staff or visitor entrance to display accessible signage and a door bell / buzzer, as a minimum.
After making the film, Steve launched an e-petition on the Government’s Petition Downing Street website

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/answer4access

The campaign has just under two months left to run and as Steve says, “whilst it is good to see a number of people supporting what I am campaigning for, the number is nowhere near enough to get the Government to take notice, unless there is a significant increase in the number before April”.

“Being able to gain access to a business premises in a dignified way with the minimum of fuss is something that the vast majority of people take for granted. Please sign the e-petition and encourage others to do the same and remember, it doesn’t just have to be disabled people who sign up”.

Something Should be Done

  • You can do what you want to do
  • You can be who you want to be
  • You can go where you want to go

This is the motto of Wheelchair Steve, who is a blogger, the inspirational star of the above YouTube film and the first RTS Entrepreneur that I had the pleasure of speaking with.

Personally and professionally, Steve is an Accessibility Champion.

His new Something Should be Done campaign challenges Government to amend the Disability Discrimination Act – ensuring every business in the UK provides signage at every public and visitor entrance advising disabled people how they may gain access to their premises, products and services.

You can find out more and register your support for the campaign here
